Green Data Center: Stable and Robust Operation at Low Energy Cost
2019-04-30
April 22, 2019, the 50th World Earth Day, the question to all DC operators in Shanghai, an international financial center and a metropolis, where the requirement on stability and quality has always been marked at a higher level, is how to continuously improve the green efficiency of data centers. After long-time proactive exploration, the SDS IDX Data Center recently shared with the industry its green efficiency achievements.
In the morning of April 21st, on invitation of the 9th China Data Center Industry Conference, the SDS participated into the Forum of Data Center Infrastructure Technology and shared its views with attendees in a key-note speech, i.e. IDX Data Center Green Construction Management Practices, given by Mr. Gu Feng, the Data Center Department Manager of SDS. Held in the SNIEC (the Shanghai New International Expo Centre), the 2020 China Data Center Industry Conference & China International Data Center Industry Expo took “Build green data center, Power up digital economy” as its theme. With green development and energy-saving in the background, the Forum of Data Center Infrastructure Technology is dedicated to the discussion over topics like data center construction, operating & maintenance, management solutions and best practices, and received the kind support and enthusiastic participation of many experts from related industries.
Mr. Gu Feng, Data Center Department Manager of SDS, delivering a speech
To the data center industry, the green management is all about high effectiveness, high efficiency and energy-saving operation. Specifically speaking, it’s about choosing the right low energy-consuming facilities, equipments and high-efficiency smart auto-control solutions, according to the characteristics of the environment where a project is installed. In his speech, Mr. Gu Feng, the Manager of SDS Data Center Department, gave a general introduction of the green achievements that SDS has made in this year to all audiences:
1. Improvements on the EC fans in the high-precision air-conditioners of IDX Data Center:
Improvements:
The comparison of data obtained before and after the improvements revealed that the energy consumption of air-conditioner fans can drop by over 60% without scarifying any blowing rate.
2. IDX Data Center Energy-saving Technology Applications:
Smart LED Light System: It is designed to eliminate unnecessary lighting power consumption by powering LED lights with POE and controlling them with a programmable automatic adjusting system, i.e. an unmanned control over the switches and illumination of all LED lights.
Natural-Cooling System of Central Air-conditioning Unit and Thermal Storing Jar: In winter, the Central Unit may rely on its natural cooling system and thermal storing jar to maintain cooling operation for two months without starting the compressors of air-conditioning system.
3. Hot Aisle Closure and Hot Return-Air Aisle Isolation Application:
There have emerged many Cold Aisle Closure application cases in the industry. The solution, however, will contain heat inside the machine room. But, to a third-party data center, it’s preferable to adopt a Hot Aisle Closure solution to provide a more agreeable environment for users who need to carry out their daily operations inside the machine rooms and, thus, ensure a better customer acceptance. Unlike the cold aisle closure solution, when the hot aisles are closed, the hot air is directed back to the air-conditioning room, leaving the most part of a machine room in a cool environment. Comparing with a Cold Aisle Closure solution in which the cooling source is isolated, the Hot Aisle Closure solution offers the favor of cold-source-sharing, and, combining the advantages of both under-floor blowing cooling and diffusive cooling technologies. In short, Hot Aisle Closure solution is excelling in good energy-saving and good in-house user experience.
4. Building External Wall Thermal Insulation and Thermal Insulating Ceiling of Machine Room in Top Floor
In a time when the State began strengthening market control with stricter policies, it’s essential for all third-party data centers here in Shanghai to align themselves with Shanghai’s “Five Centers” and “Excellent Cosmopolitan” strategic objectives and their self-positions in the market accordingly. Such policy change has largely defined the business and market scope of all data centers. Not only that, to all the third-party internet data centers in Shanghai, the construction and operating costs will inevitably keep on growing, which, in turn, will force all data center operators to invest in energy-saving technologies and products and improving those data centers that fall short of new energy requirements. Otherwise, they’d either pay more for the extra energy consumption under a tiered power pricing system or move their data centers out of Shanghai. The data centers remaining located in Shanghai, therefore, will become a kind of rare resource. In that background, it’s particularly necessary for all IDX data center operators to transform their management to a more refined mode and their management team to a more change-welcoming team.
With its extensive influence in the country, the DCIC2019, i.e. the 9th China Data Center Industry Conference & Expo, attracted many visitors, e.g. responsible persons of state and local industrial authorities, representatives from local governments, representatives from IDCUN and IDC General Manager Club, renowned experts and scholars from related industries, and leaders of corporations operating in the up-stream and down-stream of the IDC industrial chain, to take part in this two-day conference. The 9th Conference included following events, i.e. DCIC General Conference, Mayors and Big-data Leaders Summit, New Technologies and Green Data Center Trends Summit, DCIC 2019 High-level Dialogue, Forum of Data Center Infrastructure Technology, Yangtze Delta Integrated Big-data Development Forum, as well as the Data Center Touring.
